The Heavy Coat: A Story of Coming Home to Yourself

She walked into the studio with her shoulders up to her ears.
You know the look—the one where someone is holding their breath without even realizing it. She told me she felt "fine," but her body was telling a different story. She described it as wearing a heavy winter coat that she couldn't take off, even in the middle of a Saskatoon summer.
She was a "doer." A mom, a professional, a friend who always showed up. But she had reached that point where the "mental tabs" in her brain were all open at once, and her battery was at 2%.
The Session
When she laid down on the table for her first Reiki and Access Bars session, she whispered, "I don't know if I can turn my brain off."
I told her the same thing I tell everyone: "You don’t have to. Just let the table hold you for a while."
As we began, the room grew still. I could see the moment her nervous system finally got the memo that it was safe to rest. Her breathing shifted from shallow chest-breaths to deep, belly-sighs. The "hum" of her anxiety started to quiet.
In that space, we weren't "fixing" her. We were simply clearing the static so she could hear herself again.
The Shift
When the session ended, she didn't jump up. She lingered. When she finally sat up, her eyes looked different—clearer, wider.
"I feel... lighter," she said, moving her shoulders. "I didn't realize how much noise I was living with until it stopped."
That "heavy coat" she had been wearing? She left it on the table. She walked out into the Northridge Drive parking lot moving a little slower, breathing a little deeper, and feeling a lot more like herself.
This is the "Reset"
Transformation doesn't always have to be a loud, mountain-top epiphany. Sometimes, it’s just the quiet relief of finally being able to let go of what isn't yours to carry.
If you feel like you’re wearing a heavy coat you can’t take off, know that you don't have to carry it alone.
