Why Your Body Won't Let You Relax
By Kiernan Garvie — Ki'smet Co
Have you ever noticed something strange?
You finally have a day off.
Nothing urgent is happening.
The house is quiet.
You sit down...
...and suddenly you feel restless.
Your mind starts racing.
You remember ten things you forgot to do.
You grab your phone.
You clean the kitchen.
You make another list.
Anything but actually rest.
If this sounds familiar, you're not failing at relaxation.
Your body may simply not believe it's safe to rest yet.
Rest Isn't Just Physical
Most people think rest means stopping.
But your nervous system doesn't measure rest by whether you're sitting on the couch.
It measures one thing:
Do I feel safe enough to let my guard down?
That's a very different question.
Many people have spent years living in survival mode.
Their bodies have learned to stay alert because staying alert once helped them cope.
Eventually, being busy starts to feel normal.
Stillness feels uncomfortable.
If you've ever wondered why you feel constantly "on edge," even when life seems calm, you'll find more insight in Why Do I Feel On Edge Even When I'm Safe?
Your Body Is Trying to Protect You
This is one of the biggest mindset shifts I hope people make.
Your body is not working against you.
It's working for you.
Even when it feels frustrating.
When your nervous system has carried stress for months—or even years—it becomes incredibly good at spotting potential danger.
Sometimes it begins preparing for problems before they even exist.
That can look like:
overthinking
difficulty sleeping
needing to stay productive
guilt when resting
always anticipating the next problem
feeling tense for no obvious reason
Your body isn't trying to ruin your peace.
It's trying to keep you safe.
Survival Mode Changes What Feels Normal
One of the hardest things about chronic stress is that it slowly becomes familiar.
You stop noticing:
the tight jaw
the shallow breathing
the racing thoughts
the clenched shoulders
It simply becomes "how I am."
If you've ever wondered whether your nervous system can actually stay stuck in that pattern, I explore it further in Can Your Nervous System Get Stuck in Survival Mode?
The good news?
Patterns can change.
Relaxation Is Something Your Body Learns
This surprises many people.
Regulation isn't a switch.
It's a relationship.
Your body slowly gathers evidence that it no longer has to prepare for danger every minute of every day.
That evidence might come from:
healthy relationships
supportive conversations
boundaries
sleep
nature
slowing down
grounded Reiki
nervous system support
Small moments repeated consistently often create the biggest shifts.
What Does Feeling Safe Actually Feel Like?
People often imagine healing as something dramatic.
But it usually isn't.
It sounds like:
"I didn't react the way I normally would."
"I slept through the night."
"I handled that conversation differently."
"I finally felt peaceful driving home."
If those experiences sound unfamiliar, don't worry.
They're exactly what many people begin noticing as their nervous system starts regulating. I describe these changes in more detail in What Does a Regulated Nervous System Actually Feel Like?
You Don't Need to Force Yourself to Relax
This might be the most important thing I can tell you.
You cannot shame your nervous system into feeling safe.
Healing doesn't happen because you push harder.
It happens because your body begins to trust that it doesn't have to carry everything alone anymore.
Sometimes that trust grows slowly.
And that's okay.
That's Why I Do This Work
At Ki'smet Co, I don't expect people to arrive relaxed.
Most don't.
They arrive tired.
Overwhelmed.
Disconnected.
Carrying more than anyone knows.
My role isn't to make them become someone different.
It's to help create an environment where their nervous system can begin remembering what safety feels like again.
Sometimes...
that's where everything changes.
You deserve more than surviving.
You deserve to know what it feels like to truly rest.
