How to Calm Your Nervous System When You Feel Overwhelmed

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately — like your mind won’t slow down or your body feels constantly on edge — you’re not alone.

This is something I see often in sessions at Ki’smet Co in Saskatoon.

On the outside, everything might look “fine. ”But internally, your nervous system is running on overdrive.

And no matter how much you try to push through… your body isn’t settling.

Why your nervous system feels this way

Your nervous system is designed to protect you.

When it senses stress — whether it’s emotional, mental, or physical — it shifts into a state of alert.

This is helpful in short bursts.

But when it stays there for too long, you may notice:

  • constant overthinking

  • tension in your body

  • difficulty relaxing

  • emotional overwhelm

  • feeling exhausted but unable to rest

This isn’t a personal failure.

It’s your body asking for support.

Simple ways to begin calming your system

You don’t need to do everything at once.

Start small.

Here are a few gentle ways to support your nervous system:

1. Slow your breath

Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds Exhale slowly for 6 seconds

The longer exhale signals safety to your body.

2. Ground into your surroundings

Look around and name:

  • 5 things you can see

  • 4 things you can feel

  • 3 things you can hear

This brings your awareness out of your mind and back into your body.

3. Soften instead of pushing

Instead of trying to “fix” how you feel, try allowing it.

Place a hand on your chest and take a breath.

Sometimes your system just needs permission to slow down.

When you need deeper support

Sometimes, self-regulation tools aren’t enough on their own.

If your system has been overwhelmed for a long time, it may need a deeper reset.

This is where energy-based sessions and nervous system support can help.

At Ki’smet Co in Saskatoon, sessions are designed to gently guide your body out of stress mode and into a more regulated, supported state.

You don’t have to force it.

Your body already knows how — it just needs the space.

You don’t have to stay in overwhelm

Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

It means your system has been holding a lot.

And it’s okay to need support.
