Why Do I Feel Stuck Even When I'm Trying My Best?

By Kiernan Garvie, Ki'smet Co | Saskatoon

Introduction

Few feelings are more frustrating than putting in effort and still feeling stuck.

You read the books.

You listen to the podcasts.

You try to stay positive.

You keep moving forward.

Yet somehow, life still feels heavy, unclear, or difficult to navigate.

Many people assume feeling stuck means they are doing something wrong.

Often, that isn't the case.

Sometimes feeling stuck is simply a sign that your nervous system needs support before it can move forward.

Feeling Stuck Is More Common Than You Think

Many women tell me:

"I know what I should do, but I can't seem to do it."

"I feel like I'm going in circles."

"I don't know what's wrong with me."

The truth is that feeling stuck is often not a lack of motivation.

When the nervous system is overwhelmed, even small decisions can feel exhausting.

Your Nervous System May Be Protecting You

When life becomes stressful, the nervous system adapts.

Its primary job is not happiness.

Its primary job is safety.

If your body perceives stress, uncertainty, exhaustion, or emotional overload, it may respond by slowing things down.

This can feel like:

• Procrastination

• Avoidance

• Indecision

• Fatigue

• Lack of motivation

• Difficulty taking action

These responses are often protective rather than personal failures.

Why Pushing Harder Doesn't Always Work

Many people respond to feeling stuck by becoming harder on themselves.

They push more.

Criticize themselves more.

Expect more.

A nervous system that already feels overwhelmed rarely responds well to additional pressure.

Sometimes what helps most is creating more safety, not more force.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Nervous System Overload

You may notice:

• Constant mental exhaustion

• Difficulty focusing

• Feeling emotionally drained

• Increased anxiety

• Feeling disconnected from yourself

• Losing interest in things you once enjoyed

• Feeling overwhelmed by simple tasks

These are often signs that your system needs support rather than judgment.

Small Steps Create Big Change

When you're feeling stuck, massive action is rarely the answer.

Small actions tend to work better.

Try:

• Going for a short walk

• Spending time outdoors

• Taking a few deep breaths

• Connecting with supportive people

• Resting without guilt

• Journaling your thoughts

• Booking time for self-care

Progress often begins when we stop trying to solve everything at once.

You Are Not Broken

One of the most important things I want people to understand is this:

Feeling stuck does not mean you are broken.

It does not mean you are lazy.

It does not mean you have failed.

Sometimes it simply means you've been carrying more than your nervous system can comfortably hold.

Support, rest, clarity, and connection often create movement where force never could.

Final Thoughts

If you've been feeling stuck lately, consider the possibility that your nervous system is asking for support rather than demanding perfection.

You may not need to work harder.

You may simply need more space to breathe.

Sometimes the path forward begins with slowing down long enough to hear what your body has been trying to tell you all along.
