Why Healing Doesn't Happen in a Straight Line (And That's Okay)

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you thought,

"I was doing so well... what happened?"

Maybe you were sleeping better.

Feeling lighter.

More patient.

More present.

Then suddenly...

You found yourself crying over something small.

Feeling anxious again.

Overthinking.

Wondering if all the healing you've done somehow disappeared overnight.

If you've ever felt that way, I'd like to gently offer you another perspective.

Maybe you didn't go backwards.

Maybe you simply met another layer of yourself.

One of the Biggest Misconceptions I See

People often imagine healing as climbing a staircase.

Step one.

Step two.

Step three.

Always moving upward.

Always improving.

Always becoming calmer.

But after years of sitting with people through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives...

I don't think healing looks anything like a staircase.

I think it looks much more like walking through a forest.

Sometimes the path is clear.

Sometimes it curves.

Sometimes you stop.

Sometimes you need to sit down.

Sometimes you think you've ended up back where you started...

Only to realize you're standing in the same place with completely different eyes.

Healing isn't about never revisiting old wounds.

It's about meeting them with a nervous system that has more capacity than it did before.

That is progress.

Your Nervous System Learns Through Repetition

Think about learning to ride a bicycle.

The first few times...

You wobble.

You lose your balance.

Maybe you fall.

You don't decide you're incapable of riding.

You simply haven't practiced enough yet.

Your nervous system learns healing in much the same way.

It doesn't suddenly forget years of survival because you've had one good week.

It slowly gathers evidence.

"I'm safe."

"I survived that conversation."

"I asked for help."

"I rested without guilt."

"I said no."

Each experience becomes another brick in the foundation.

Eventually your body begins believing what your mind has been hoping for all along.

Reflection

Think back to who you were one year ago.

Not what you've accomplished.

Who you've become.

How do you respond differently now?

Do you recover more quickly?

Notice your emotions sooner?

Set healthier boundaries?

Rest without as much guilt?

Healing often happens so gradually that we overlook it.

Sometimes the greatest evidence of growth isn't that life has become easier.

It's that you've become kinder to yourself while living it.

Healing Often Feels Messy Before It Feels Peaceful

This surprises many people.

As our nervous system begins feeling safer...

It sometimes allows us to feel emotions we've been carrying for years.

Not because we're getting worse.

Because we're finally ready.

Imagine cleaning out a closet you've ignored for twenty years.

For a little while...

The room looks messier than when you started.

That doesn't mean cleaning was a mistake.

It means you're finally seeing what has been hidden.

Healing can feel exactly like that.

I've Noticed Something Beautiful

One of my favorite moments happens when a client says,

"I handled that differently."

Not perfectly.

Differently.

Maybe they still became anxious...

But they recovered faster.

Maybe they still cried...

But they didn't judge themselves for it.

Maybe they still felt overwhelmed...

But they asked for support instead of pretending they were okay.

Those are the moments I celebrate.

Not because they're dramatic.

Because they're real.

Healing isn't becoming someone else.

It's slowly becoming more yourself.

Reflection

Can I ask you something?

If you stopped measuring healing by how "perfectly" you handled life...

How would you know you're healing?

What would you notice instead?

Take a moment with that.

There isn't a wrong answer.

Before You Go...

If today feels harder than yesterday...

Please don't assume you've failed.

The nervous system doesn't heal in straight lines.

Neither do hearts.

Neither do people.

Give yourself permission to have difficult days without deciding you've gone backwards.

You are still healing.

Even on the days it doesn't feel like it.

Especially on those days.

At Ki'smet Co., I believe healing isn't measured by never struggling again.

It's measured by how gently you learn to meet yourself when you do.

And that changes everything.

Come as you are. Leave a little lighter. 🤍
