Reiki is widely known as a hands-on healing practice where a practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above your body to channel healing energy. But what about when you’re not physically near a Reiki practitioner? Can Reiki work over long distances?
The Concept of Distant Reiki
Many Reiki practitioners believe that Reiki energy isn’t limited by space or time. Because Reiki is based on a universal life force energy that flows everywhere, some say it can be sent to someone no matter where they are—even across cities, countries, or continents.
This is often called Distant Reiki or Distance Healing.
How Does Distant Reiki Work?
During a distant Reiki session, the practitioner typically:
Enters a meditative state to focus on the recipient
Uses intention and symbols (in some traditions) to send healing energy
Believes the energy connects directly to the recipient regardless of physical distance
Some practitioners ask for the recipient’s name, photo, or a personal object to help focus their intention.
Is There Scientific Proof?
Just like with hands-on Reiki, scientific evidence for distant Reiki is limited and mixed:
There is no scientific measurement of the energy or how it travels over distances.
Some studies suggest people report feeling relaxed or comforted after distant Reiki sessions.
Other studies show mixed or inconclusive results.
The effects might come from the recipient’s belief and expectation, or from a real but currently unmeasurable energy connection.
Why Do People Choose Distant Reiki?
Accessibility: Distance Reiki allows people to receive healing even if they live far from a practitioner.
Convenience: No travel or scheduling in person.
Comfort: Some feel more relaxed receiving healing in their own space.
Things to Keep in Mind
Distant Reiki is considered a complementary practice — it shouldn’t replace medical treatment.
If you’re interested, try it with an open mind but also stay grounded in evidence-based care.
Communication between you and the practitioner is important for clarity and setting expectations.
In Summary
While distant Reiki isn’t scientifically proven, many people find it helpful for relaxation and emotional support, even from afar. Whether it’s hands-on or distant, Reiki’s core intention is to promote calm, balance, and healing energy — wherever you are.
